How the names work卦の呼び方

The large character is the hexagram's name as it appears in the original text. In Japan, hexagrams are usually called by a three- or four-character name that adds the two trigrams: 水雷屯 means "water above, thunder below, and the name 屯 (Zhūn)". Likewise 風天小畜 is "wind above, heaven below, and the name 小畜 (Xiǎo Chù)". The eight hexagrams whose two trigrams are the same use 為, "is": 乾為天 reads "Qián is heaven", and the name is its first character, 乾. English names follow Richard Wilhelm's German translation (1924).

One line, two, three, six

Every figure in the Changes is built from unbroken (yang) and broken (yin) lines. Each size has its own name.

How to cast a hexagram

There are two ways to consult the book: a basic one that needs only the hexagram, and a closer reading for those who want more. Once you have a hexagram, open its page.

Basic基本

With the cards

  1. Hold your question in mind and shuffle the deck well.
  2. Draw one card.
  3. Open that hexagram's page and read the Essence. Read the scenes and cases too, if you like.

No deck at hand? You can draw from “Today's card” on this page.

With three coins

  1. Take three coins. Count heads as 3 and tails as 2 (some traditions reverse this).
  2. Toss all three and add them up. The total is 6, 7, 8 or 9.
  3. 7 and 9 give a yang line; 6 and 8 give a yin line.
  4. Toss six times. The first toss is the bottom line; stack the rest upward.
  5. Find the hexagram in the index and read its Essence.

Tip: when the coins are mixed, the odd one out decides. One head makes yang; one tail makes yin.

For a closer reading

The Changes is about change. Some lines are settled, while others have reached their extreme and are about to turn into their opposite, as midsummer turns toward autumn. These are the moving lines, and they are the focus of a reading. Turn each moving line into its opposite and you get a second hexagram, which shows where things are heading.

Cards: one moving line

  1. Draw one card. This is the present situation.
  2. Roll a die. The number is the moving line, counted from the bottom (1 to 6).
  3. On the hexagram's page, read the scene with that number. This is the heart of the reading.
  4. Turn that line into its opposite. The new hexagram shows where things are heading.

Example: Modesty (15) and a 2. Read scene 2, “modesty that makes itself heard.” Turning line 2 gives Pushing Upward (46): things are set to rise step by step.

In “Today's card” on this page, one line may pulse slowly when the card turns over. That is the moving line. If nothing pulses, there is no moving line; read the Essence.

Coins: 9 and 6 move

  1. Toss as in the basic method. A 9 (three heads) is a moving yang line; a 6 (three tails) is a moving yin line.
  2. Draw the hexagram with 9 as yang and 6 as yin. This is the present situation.
  3. Turn only the moving lines into their opposites. This hexagram shows where things are heading.
  4. What to read depends on how many lines move (table below).
Moving動く線What to read読むところ
none0本the present hexagram's Essence本卦の大意

The more lines move, the more the reading shifts from the present hexagram to the one it is becoming.

Fifty yarrow stalks

The method described in the Xici commentary uses fifty stalks. Each line takes three rounds of counting, so a full hexagram takes eighteen.『

  1. Set one of the fifty stalks aside. Use the remaining forty-nine.
  2. Without thinking, split them into two bundles, left and right.
  3. Take one stalk from the right bundle and hold it between the little and ring fingers of your left hand.
  4. Count off the left bundle by fours and hold the remainder (1 to 4) between your fingers. Do the same with the right bundle.
  5. Put the stalks in your fingers aside (5 or 9 of them). With what is left, repeat steps 2 to 4 twice more; these rounds set aside 4 or 8.
  6. After three rounds, divide the remaining stalks by four: 36 gives 9, 32 gives 8, 28 gives 7, 24 gives 6. This is one line.
  7. Do this six times, building the hexagram from the bottom up. Read the 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s exactly as with the coins.

The odds differ from the coins. With stalks, a moving yang line (9) comes up three times as often as a moving yin line (6); with coins they are equally likely.
